Never try to predict the future.
I should have learned that lesson a long time ago. My inability to determine the lengths and schedules of my projects beforehand is so well-established that I consider it more of an endearing quirk than a character flaw. With that in mind, my previous post on what my next few projects would be was, as I warned at the time, mere guesses. As guesses go, it was more accurate than most I’ve made. I DID publish an October Falls anthology and not just one, but two Crusade collections, as promised. But I can pretty much tell you that the remainder of that list is out the window. Magekiller, Saint Noir, Darker, Other Side of the Eye will get done eventually, but they are no longer on the short list of things to work on in the next year.
So what IS on that short list?
As my previous cryptic post implied, my next project will be something brand new. I’m about 80% settled on a brand new novel that I intend to start writing over the Christmas holidays.
Trust me… 80% committed is a big deal. Yes, I’ve bailed on ideas that I’ve been even more committed to. Hell, I’ve abandoned projects that were already well underway, as you well know. But this idea is has been brewing for a while, and was the first (and so far, strongest) to surface when I started entertaining the idea of writing something new. That’s a good sign.
I’ll leave the details of the still untitled story for later. For now, let’s call it post-apocalyptic sci/fi-horror. Yes, it has cyborgs. No, it does not have ghosts. It doesn’t technically have zombies, but… well, you’ll just have to see. I intend to have it done around the end of winter… which, as you know, could very well turn into the beginning of summer, so no promises there. More details will follow.
Besides the untitled new novel, 2017 will also see me working on a third Crusade collection and another collection of short stories, most of which will be brand new. Maybe. Probably. At least that’s what I’ve been thinking for the past few weeks. See my previous line about predicting the future.
I’ve also come to the conclusion that I need to do some more regular updating on this website (duh!), so I can promise that I will at least try to do some things similar to what I used to do (reviews, random rants, etc). I could set a public goal for weekly updates, but everyone here knows that’s BS so just sit back and see what happens when.
And that’s it.
Subscribe for updates, and be sure to follow me on Twitter because I intend to start doing more with that as well. Maybe.
I never got into twitter, so I’ll just stick with the Web site and email updates. I look forward to whatever you present.
Merry Christmas, or whatever holiday greeting is appropriate for you.
I never got into Twitter either. I’ve had an account for over ten years and I STILL don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do with it. But apparently it’s one of those things you’re “supposed to do” as an author.
