Chapter 25: Good and Honest Citizens of Montfort

Private Jereminah Inleay waited for Judge Gilford's secretary, Elektra,
to finish up the list of current landowners in Montfort, and while land
ownership wasn't the main criteria for the jury the list was at least a
starting point.

Elektra's brow was furrowed in concentration as she flipped through
another stack of files. Suddenly she said, "There he is! I knew we had one
more .... a Mr. Baylon Simeon Terron." She took up her quill and scratched
his name, and directions to his residence, onto the list.

After the ink had dried she handed the list to Inleay.

"Thank you," Jereminah said, "This will help." With that she bade Elektra
"good bye," and headed back to the Guard Tower so she could give the list
to Sargaent Mercer.

When she reached the Tower she found that the Sargaent was busy, but that
he had put another Private, a Hollin Avery, at her disposal. Avery was a
lanky young man, and even newer than she was, so he was more than willing
to take her lead as they headed out into Montfort. "Green" was the only
word Jereminah could think of for the boy, and thanked the gods that she
wasn't on a real patrol with him; a farm boy come to town from a nearby
village to "improve" himself, and fresh out of basic. His combination of
wide-eyes and puffed chest reminded her, uncomfortably, of her first days
in Bleckner's Watch, and also reminded her of the scar across her ribs,
which ached when rain was coming.

But for now he was staying out of mischief and had a decent enough
handwriting (his Da's insistence that he know how to cipher) to take down
names. So they were able to divide up the work as they went from tavern to
tavern (their presence often rousing one or two worried patrons who
usually slipped for the backdoors - which required Inleay to keep Avery in
check). Their other stops included: the Colisium (Inleay's sharp gaze
warning Avery to keep his mouth shut at the sight of slaves); the Bard's
Hall (a far more pleasant stop); the House of December; and the Healer's
Hall.

Several foot-wearying hours later the two Privates made their way back to
the City Hall, and were allowed to go find dinner while Perrin Mayce and
Arno Everett chose 100 names - from which 12 jurors would be called. And
since there was some light left by the time the list had been compiled
Inleay and Avery were sent forth with the various summons to jury duty.
The auspicious first jury in the rebuilt city of Montfort.
