In Deed
Comments and questions about the Book of Dark Places story "In Deed" should go here.
I am not a Character.

From another thread:

So far this story is reminding me of the movie Pitch Black. I doubt it'll continue in that vein, but that's how I'm reading it to this
point. |
It isn't unusual that you would mention Pitch Black. It starts out almost exactly like that movie, and there are further similarities in the next
few chapters. But after that the story veers away into different territory. At least I hope it does... sometimes I don't have much control over
these things.
The reason for the similarities is that this story is an old one that was indirectly inspired by that movie. I'll explain "indirectly inspired" in
a bit. I loved Pitch Black, and my thoughts after seeing it was that I could top it. By "top" it, I meant take essentially the same setting, put
different people it, and come up with a story that, if it were a movie, would make people forget all about Riddick and those light-sensitive aliens.
I started writing that story years ago, but I stopped for some reason, and the original text has been lost... if it hadn't been, I would have
finished the text version and posted it, since the entire plot was already outlined and I was halfway done with the actual writing. Now, after all
these years, I can only remember a few scenes and a few key points about the characters and the planet. And the title, which was not "In Deed",
but was something else that now, in hindsight, is too silly to repeat. No one ever read that original story, although I did describe it to one
person who has probably since forgotten it.
So about a week and a half ago, I decided that the story I was going to do next for BoDP was going to be too much work, and I needed something
simpler. Enter, "In Deed."
The BoDP story "In Deed" is based on the old story I never finished, which was in turn based on Pitch Black. Thus: Indirectly Inspired. Both
stories share the same opening sequence with Pitch Black. The written story actually described the crash in detail, just like the movie showed it.
In fact, when I was writing it, I was trying to describe the crash from the movie. I lack the skill to do that in CG, so I just fast-forwarded that
part. The characters are original. The written version had one or two more, but I've written them out of the BoDP version. Also, one character
has undergone a race and sex change. And yes, there is a BadAss in this story. ...but now that I think about it, there's a BadAss in EVERY story
I write, sometimes multiple BadAsses, so that shouldn't come as a surprise. There is an abandoned colony that will be showing up pretty soon, but
there are no hordes of light-sensitive aliens inhabiting it. There are only four monsters in this tale, and you've already seen three of them.
Hopefully the movie similarities will fade as we go along. If they don't... well... you DID LIKE Pitch Black, didn't you?
I am not a Character.
I am Real.

And I know where you Dream.

Interesting, I've found Pitch Black in a movie rental and watched it about one month ago. This movie and its sequel (The Batle of Ridick) never came
to the movie theathers down here.
Yes, the begining is similar to Pitch Black, but reminds me of another movie also, ... something about mind controling aliens.
Well, ... let see where it goes.

Oops
I meant to post that in this thread, since this is where it belongs.
I did like Pitch Black, and I liked the Chronicles of Riddick even better. I'd like to know more about Riddicks character background, but don't know
if there are any more movies coming.
Your stories have always had great character background and development. There's still a LOT we don't know about some characters like N'Doki,
K'Sano, and the rest of the Dragon's Inn crew, not to mention Ashley (just what the heck IS she?), but what you wrote so far is great.
That's where one of your strengths is at. The CG you use in BODP doesn't allow for the depth of character background/development that Hollywood
movies do, but the movies are no where near what you've written down.
I'm looking forward to this story continuing, and I'm sure I'll be surprised a time or two as it does.
