BoDP news feed!
The Book of Dark Places now has an RSS news feed, which will replace the much-neglected "news" page on the site. Subscribers to the feed with be
notified of updates when they occur (which means you'll know if/when I update a day early). They'll also recieve the occasional rant, review, cool
link, and exclusive content. Just what does "exclusive content" mean? We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?
To subscribe to the BoDP news feed, click here and follow the
directions on the page or add this link: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheBookOfDarkPlaces into your RSS application of choice.
---That concludes the announcement. For those of you who are a tad confused about what a news feed is and how to use it, read on:
I've known about RSS feeds for a while (I'm not THAT out of touch!), but I failed to see their true usefulness until I actually subscribed to a
couple of them. Now I see. These days, they're mostly used for blogs and news sites. Since I check my favorites regularly, there was no real
need for me to be notified when they added new content. Ahh, but what about the sites that I check IRREGULARLY? What about those few sites that I
read that dont' have an established update schedule? How do I know when they've added new stuff? How do I know if that stuff is worth checking
out? Well... now, when a site who's feed I subscribe to has new stuff, I get notified.
Notification can come in one of several ways, depending on how you want to receive the info. Most modern email clients have an RSS reader built into
them, and it works kind of like newsgroups used to (remember them?). Personally, I use Google's Reader so that I can have access to my feeds from any internet-connected computer. You can also download a separate
RSS client. Some are free. Some are not. But honestly, I wouldn't bother with either. Just use Google's reader or check to see if your mail
client has the functionality built in. It probably does.
Here's how it works: Suppose you have no idea what BoDP's update schedule is. Or you only check the site once every couple of weeks, and don't
know how many new pages have been added in that time. It'd be nice if you had a link to every new page somewhere that you could just click on
them, right? Okay. Subscribe to BoDP's newsfeed. When I update BoDP, I also put a new entry in the newsfeed. You'll recieve it in whatever
reader you're using. Wait three weeks, and you'll have three weeks worth of links to new updates that you can check out. You'll also have a
few announcements about the site, and maybe some other things in there as well.
No, this does NOT mean that I'll stop posting here on the Asylum Walls. I just think it's more convienient for some peope (those who already use RSS
feeds) to keep track of BoDP using a newsfeed rather than to keep coming here to the AW to see if I've posted anything BoDP related. Important
announcements (lack of updates for an extended period, new stories, etc.) will appear in both places. But notification of new pages will only occur
on the feed. Use it, or not... I'm just making it available.
