Darker

Since the updates are so short and frequent now, it makes no sense to spawn a new thread for each one. Therefore, this shall be the official feedback/discussion thread for the new BoDP story, "Darker". Feel free to use it.

Scheduling updates (which will also be frequent) will receive their own thread, so watch for them elsewhere.

***NOTE: Spoilers may be discussed below, so read at your own risk.***

Oh HELL yeah!

Just saw the latest scene, and the title of the story. I didn't realize at first that this was a sequal to-- well, if any of you reading this don't know what I'm babbling fanboyishly about, go check it out! Just make sure you don't miss a scene (view the previous ones first if ya have to), cuz these are coming uncharacteristically fast from DI. Not that I'm complaining, of course.

What ya probably should have said was pay attention to the title of the story once it is (finally) displayed.

Don't just read it. WATCH it for a few seconds.

Then you'll know what 'wolf is talking about.

Like it

I like the speed of the upgrades, now I will go there and check everyday.

Very, very nice.

I hope that the psychic is sort of the hero of the tale.
What do you have against scientists DI? We are not so bad.

Why nobody ever thinks about scientists with psychic abilities?

OK, I am waiting to see who will die first. Apparently sacrifice will be unlikely in this case, with this group.

I'm liking it. The more frequent updates are making the story easier to follow for me. I'm gonna have to find time to go back and re-read the Inquisitors now.

I noticed something funny on DarkIcon.com when I was looking for the original Inquisitors story. The website software automatically censored the original text when I entered it. It replaced all those lovely profanities with *bleep*, which made the whole thing pretty much unreadible. I don't know if it was just for me or if everybody sees it that way, so what I did was restore the ORIGINAL htm file from the old Library. The link is here:

http://www.darkicon.com/Library/inq1.htm

BTW, I did this a couple of weeks ago. The above link is actually hidden in one of the episodes. It's on a piece of dialog that mentions the events in The Inquisitors.

AND finally, for those new to DarkIcon.com and who haven't read The Inquisitors, let me warn you: The Inquisitors is NOT child-safe in any meaning of the word.

Oops!

Sometimes you have to own up to mistakes, and sometimes you can get away with covering them up and hoping nobody notices. This is one I should probably own up to.

The female character in the current "Darker" story has been going by the wrong name. Her name is supposed to be "Jamie", but I have been calling her "Sarah". I WOULD just let it pass, but there is some significance to the name, so I had to go back to the previous episodes and change her name wherever it occured. I'm in the process of doing that now. So, from this point forward, just pretend her name has been "Jamie" all along. Hope that doesn't ruin anything for anybody.

Oddly enough, I made a similar mistake in "Damnation Denied" but I just changed the previous episodes and nobody noticed. Heh. Fooled ya!

Nice

Nice action scene, wonder how far the regeneration goes. Probably as far as the ghost wants it to go.
And I wonder if the mob guy wants to talk to know who did that to his brother or if he is just going to destroy everything in the house, basically making the same mistake as the inquisitors.
About the name, I really do have some difficulties remembering names, and english names sometimes seem more difficult to remember. So, do not expect me to see these mistakes.

Nice, the animation is getting better with each episode but the fight sequence is starting to get boring. Waiting for the plot line to proceed.

Do not Agree

The action scenes are not bory, when seen in a certain light. I am also hoping for a continuation of the plot, but I am sure that someone tha saw these scenes at once instead of three each few day would love them.
By the way, they are well done.
Actually I like them and prefer the update schedule being followed now, but the plot calls and I am curious.

Oh Yeah

Today's episode (10/27/06) is excellent! I went through it twice expecting to have some sort of sound effect, but the lack of sound is part of what makes this one so good.

I still miss Jason, Eric, N'Doki, Zade, Blaymore, Kultra, K'sano, December, Chthrain, and all the others though. Any chance of a written update before the end of the year?

Agree

Agree with Nate both about Darker and about the written stuff.
Actually, I love it when the characters are smart enough to leave the house when they loose ther advantage.
It was wise and leaving soon was smart on the part of the big bad guy.
He knows that he needs the machine and that with no machine there is no way to avenge his brother, so, he can't really harm the scientist.
Of course the last scene with the ghost almost getting the psychic was excelent and left us waiting to see if the ghost will do it or not.
Nice, very nice.

Better

And it gets better and better.
I am not seeing any problem with the faces or backgrounds this time. The dialogues are shorter and more "movie like". Wich is, surprisingly, good.
But the characters do not make all those mistakes that wee see in movies. Nice.
Curiosity: The ghost must be bound to the property where the house is, isn't it? If yes, simply taking the psychic out of the place would solve the problem, no?
Know your enemy ... I hope that these guys made a research before getting into this one.

The Book of Dark Places - November 13, 2006

First chapter that made me laugh out loud. Trademark Dark Icon humor in a dark and gritty story - gotta love it.

Problem

I went to a previous chapter just in case I had lost one and in the menu at the end of the page it was written previous page where it should be next page.

I wonder how many ghosts are coming out of this house?

An update, cool, an update.
OK, I got too used to the frequent updates now I am adicted to them.

Possible Spoilers Bellow (but I doubt)

About the plot, I am guessing that the ghost will take possession of mister hook. After all, this is the most logical thing to do.
Second option: something really nice inside said ghost (the killer intestin again?)

I agree, I can get used the the frequent updates. I understand that real life will intervene occasionally though, hence the lack of updates for last week. That's ok though, at least we have an update this morning. BODP is getting better with each one.

I still long for an update on the other site though. Blaymore's still drugged, Zade's still chained to a wall, Eric's gotta be doing something interesting....

I love the Book of Dark Places and I love your stories. I am curious as to how you come up with your story ideas. They are simply amazing and way too good. I discovered the Book during the Damnation Denied storyline and followed it through Saint Noir till Darker. As I understand it (and I could be wrong), you are doing this as a hobby (or for some other darker reason). Believe me I have waited for each set of panes to come in more than I have waited for anything in my life. Also I would like to know whether it would be possible for you to revert to the Damnation Denied and Saint Noir style with an entire set of panes coming every month. Its just me but consider this as a request from a very big fan. Do let me know what you think.

From the feedback I’ve gotten so far (which admittedly hasn’t been much), I think you’re the only person to request a return to the longer format. I think some people enjoy having a lot more of the story revealed in each chapter, but their desire to have updates more often wins out over having more substantial updates with long delays between them. I think I’ll keep the short format for the next story, and possibly experiment with some kind of hybrid format for the one after that. Personally, I think two weeks is way too long to wait between updates, no matter how long the updates are. Maybe one update a week? I don’t know; I’m still experimenting. The idea is to get something that people enjoy AND that I can maintain given my heavy travel schedule.

I could write an essay about the REAL reasons I produce the Book of Dark Places, but the short answer is that eventually I expect to make SOME money off of the project. I don’t expect to get rich, but I expect to cover my bandwidth costs and make some beer money every month. That’s not happening now, but I haven’t put any serious effort into advertising the project until last month. Right now the entire project is still in an “experimental” state, which means that, if I’m still not covering my costs 12 months from now, I will probably quit. Sorry to be mercenary about it, but, well… I’m a mercenary.

All of the BoDP stories came from questions that I have had at one time or another. If we could “fix” someone’s brain so that they aren’t evil any more (whatever “evil” is), would God forgive them or does He have exclusive rights to the “fixing evil” market? Would our efforts piss Him off? What would happen if Satan asked for forgiveness? Is the devil’s standard for forgiveness different than ours? And I think we can guess what “Darker” is about. I will admit, though, that the idea of people fighting back against the supernatural isn’t new to my fiction. My stories are full of stuff like that. I guess the idea of an entity being untouchable but still capable of hurting or killing me just makes me want to call “bullshit”. I assume you’ve read the original “Inquisitors” story, of which “Darker” is a sort-of sequel. Some spirits get handled rather roughly in that story, too. Heh… imagine what the presence of The Sampler would do to movies like “The Grudge” or “The Ring” Can you say “ghosts getting their teeth kicked in?” I knew you could!

Anyway, I’m glad you’re enjoying the stories.

You know, when watching "The Ring" I´ve spent the whole time thinking that there should be a way to hurt that ghost.
Actually, the traditional way to stop the madness would be burial in holy ground. The dead started to be buried in holy ground so that people would not fear them and make small offerings to their ancestors. The church didn´t like these pagan offerings.
In real life, if what I see is not just my imagination (big if here), ghosts can be hurt both by faith and by will, after all, we all are ghosts bound by flesh.
I do not like movies where the monster is so above the good guys that they can´t fight back. They may not win but they must have a chance or else where is the fun? To an anthil we must be horrible undefeatable monsters, but I don´t think that anyone would find it funny to see a man fighting a commom anthil.
On the other hand, I already had a taste of fire ant poison, not even them are really a treat but it hurts.
About the size of the updates, it is working. I´ve been out for a while and had the pleasure of reading a lot of the tale at once today. It was very good, but reading a little bit at a time with little intervals is also nice.
Go to other sites like http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/
or http://clanofthecats.com/
and you will see that they also do small updates two or three times in a week.
By the way, there is a guy that does two updates a week but posts a third one whenever there is enough money in the donations account.

Excelent dilema. If we turn off the machine we die, if not we are damned.
I wonder if the "voice of conscience" Jamie will find a way to solve this problem.

Ed, this is Dark Icon we're talking about. While I have no clue how this story will turn out, I'm guessing that not only will Jamie NOT find a way to solve the dilemma, but she'll probably just make things worse. At least, that's usually how it goes around here; I could be wrong.

BTW DI, I am one of those few who enjoy longer chapters while suffering longer delays; however, I'm not "bothered" by the current format, so that's just my two cents, not a suggestion or hint, just a bit of statistical feedback. Either way it's all good, keep 'em comin'!
