General Feedback
This thread is for general feedback/complaints concerning the mechanics of the website, etc.
I'll start it off by asking a question of those of you who have registered a membership and checked out the archive: Would you prefer a link to
a previous chapter to open in a new browser window or in the same browser window?

same one
I'm not a big fan of opening up new browser windows simply because of popup blockers and such.
So personally, I'd prefer that links opened up in the already active browser window.

I agree with Wiz, same window (or tab, for us Firefox users). 'Sides, if a Firefox surfer wants to open it in a new tab, he/she can just middle-click
the link, problem solved. When using IE, forcing the link to open in a new window (which is a whole new browser instance) when it's not expected is,
generally speaking, a pain in the ass.

I like it. The story is everything we'd expect from you, and the art is fast catching up.
The only problem I have with the layout is that jarring transitions between frames. I'd suggest coming up with a few different 'camera wipes' and
using them to transition, as it will make the whole thing look a lot smoother.
Just a basic alpha-fade or a side-to-side wipe would add a lot.

Agreed. And at the rate you're going DI, I may soon have some competition in that department. :o
LJ makes a good point, transitions would definitely be nice, but they're not absolutely necessary. If you can include them with little or no
extra hassle, I'd say go for it. If they become disproportionately time-consuming to implement, then of course leave 'em out for now. (At least
until this project actually generates a profit.)
So when's the next chapter?? Lookin' forward to it!

Never happen.
For those who don't know, Werewolf is a bonafide ARTIST with talent on loan from God. I got the screencaps to prove it, dude... don't make me
post 'em.

So when's the next chapter??
|
Monday, October 24th.
As for the transitions... those are easy to do but they're the kind of 'easy' that still takes a lot of time. I might throw a transition or two
in when it helps the artistic presentation (whatever the hell THAT means) but I won't be using them as a general course of business. To put a
transition on every picture would increase the amount of time it takes to assemble the Flash file, and I'm trying to get production time shorter, not
longer.

And I say post em! What do ya think Werewolf? Mayhap let DI post a little of your work?
I've heard him talk about your stuff in the past and personally I'd love to see a little of your talent.

Actually, DI has been generous enough to let me use a small portion of his website space for just such a purpose until I get my own site. I just
haven't gotten around to 'advertising' the URLs until now cuz, well... nobody asked. :)
Some of my art can be found here. These are mostly "digital airbrush";
painting with the mouse is a royal bitch, and takes a long time, which is why I'm not the most prolific artist. Also included there are some
3D models I built from scratch in RayDream. For screenshots of the 3D action game I'm programming, look here. Hope ya like 'em.
Note that none of these are actual webpages yet, just directories with JPEG files in 'em. Still workin' on that...

Thanks LJ!
Hell yeah, I'm always available for some freelance work. Email my Yahoo account listed on my Asylum Walls user page, and I'll email ya back with my
"real" email (which I never EVER publish anywhere on the Web, and listen to the blissful silence of No Spam).
Thanks again for the props. No matter WHAT some artists will tell you about not caring whether or not anyone likes their work, they're full of shit
-- it's always encouraging to hear that someone enjoys it.

Hear hear!
As an amateur artist myself, I agree with Werewolf's sentiment. Every artist likes to hear opinions of their work. Especially positive feedback.
Werewolf - I like it. A lot. Mind if I use StillFlying as a desktop? I'd recommend you switch to a tablet. Mice suck for just about everything. We got one about four years ago and haven't looked back. I did my avatar with
ours (and photoshop).
"If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth the reading, or do things worth the writing."

Thanks Gorgon. I make my artwork for others to enjoy (as well as my own satisfaction), so you go right ahead and use any of my stuff for wallpaper, or
pretty much anything else as long as it's for personal/non-profit use. And tell all your friends! :)
I'd love to get a Wacom tablet, but I'm in a low income bracket right now; rent, food, car upkeep, etc. have to come first. Hell, I haven't even
upgraded my PC in nearly a year (oh, the humanity). Hopefully ProjectX will pull
me out of this pay level.
My avatar was done in Paintshop Pro using, yep, a frickin' mouse. You're right, mice suck for just about everything... except FPS and RTS games. I
did buy a cheap $100 tablet a few years ago, but you get what you pay for. It was nearly worthless for drawing/painting any kind of artwork.
And just to get this thread back on topic...
DI, I was wondering if you plan on doing any future Dragon's Inn-based stories in the new comics format, either here at darkicon.com or at BODP? Just
a thought. I think it'd be cool to see some of our most beloved characters in a story told in that format. Certainly a story involving the Cthrain --
or N'Doki for that matter! -- would qualify as a horror tale. :)

Holy crap! And with your talent who needs a stinkin' web page. Jeez dude, you kick serious ass.
DI, no offence dude, but I can see why you said you'd never get as good as he is. Talent like his just doesn't lay around with everyone and you've
got story telling talent in spades.

There are no plans for that happening, but that's not saying that it won't ever happen. What's more likely is a Crusade-related story
('related' as in different characters, same universe), but even that is both distant and tentative. I've got the next seven or so stories
planned out for BoDP. I don't know how long it'll take to tell them, but I'm sure that'll take me through the next two years. Then I'm
coming up with a new idea almost every other day, so.... it might be a while before any of the 'tentative' ideas show up.
Now... if some miracle occurs and I start making enough $$$ with this thing to quit my very-well-paying day job, well who KNOWS what could happen!
I DID have an idea or two for doing an illustrated December story a long time ago. I might revive it if BoDP takes off, but that'll be non-BoDP and
most likely not free, either.
...if people keep abbreviating my name as "DI" I wonder how long before some Princess Diana links show up in the google boxes...

Um, sorry 'bout that guys, I don't know WHAT happened there. I also tried sending myself a test email and I still haven't received it yet, nor has
it bounced back.
Emails from my main account are on the way.
DI, apologies for inadvertantly hijacking your Feedback thread. Maybe you could move this discussion to a different thread where we could continue it
out-of-the-way?

I can't 'move' the discussion, but you can start another thread at your leisure and continue the conversation there.
Also, if Yahoo is screwing with you, I can set you up with an AT darkicon DOT com address. I think you used to have one of those anyway.

Discussion moved
I've created a new thread here for anyone
interested in my artwork, or for that matter, fantasy/sci-fi/horror art in general. Please direct any replies to this topic there, as it's rather
off-topic here.

Honestly dude, I couldn't even hope to keep up with your schedule drawing with a mouse. Now, once I get a half-decent tablet, THEN I'll toss my hat
in the ring. Until then, I'd only slow you down.
