Damnation Denied - Chapter 1
The first full chapter of "Damnation Denied" is up and ready at BookOfDarkPlaces.com
I've incorporated some of the previous feedback in this new chapter, but I'm still very much in beta-mode with this thing. I already know some
changes I'm going to make in Chapter 2, so don't be shy about sending me those suggestions. Expect changes to the website to happen randomly and
without announcement. If you can't load the site for an extended period of time, know that either the host is down (having problems with that
lately) or I'm working on a unexpectedly difficult modification. Advertisements will show up soon. Don't bitch about 'em.
As expected/promised, this first chapter is longer than what I want the 'average' chapter to be, and it took exactly as long as I predicted to
produce it. So far, so good.
The file weighs in at 1.8MB, so people on dial-up should be patient. (I want 2MB to be an absolute maximum for these things for bandwidth cost
reasons). The file is 100% preloaded, so freezing should not be an issue.
Flash experts who know of ways I can get file size lower without sacrificing TOO much quality... email me. I want to talk to you.
As for the story itself, by now you should have an idea or two about where its going. One of you KNOWS where it's going, and I trust you'll keep
quiet, even if somebody here guesses it outright.
Enjoy the show.

First post! Woot!
Er, sorry... too much time on Slashdot.
Anyway, I get to be the first to say, this is shaping up pretty damn cool. Can't wait for the next chapter. And the next. And the next...

Oh yeah, forgot... nice Eric Hood reference. But then again, in retrospect it was almost manditory given the subject matter. :)

Tried to get in what?
The file should start playing when you load the page...

Oh, unless you mean you're trying to LOG IN to the site.
You'll have to register... it isn't the same system that the Asylum Walls uses. Entirely different site. And when you register an account on
that site, it will send a random password to you. And there's really no reason to register right now unless you missed the intro chapter.
I'll make an annoucement when the "Members Only" section is ready to go. That'll be sometime this weekend. I'll have something special for ya
then, hopefully.

Nothing loads
I'm not new here, but I've lost my password for my old user name so I had to create a new one. Anyone who might remember me would do so as nsc. The
password was lost because my registered email address was at my former place of employment. Hopefully that won't happen again.
I'm not seeing anything when I visit the new site. The bottom of my browser window keeps saying (1 item remaing) Opening page http://www.bookofdarkplaces.com/...
I didn't have any trouble last week with the intro, but now if I log onto the new site (I did register at it) I get the same result when trying to
view the intro. (1 item remaining)......
Although I'm very curious about the new site, and I certainly wish DI the best at it, I am slightly depressed that it seems this will negatively
affect the other stories. From what DI has writtne on the Asylum Walls before, I was looking forward to Cold War, finishing of Captive Souls,
continuation of CSI Montfort, finding out who the Burning Man and Silvermass are, more Magekiller, and whatever else was in the works. Not to mention
Crusade. I haven't seen enough of BODP to know if I'll like it as much as the writings on DI, but time will tell. With as much time and effort as
has been spent on the current stories, I'd almost rather see advertising appear on this site if it would make updates happen even on a monthly
basis.
Good luck to you DI in both efforts. I plan to check out BODP from home on my dialup connection and see if it works from there.

There does appear to be some kind of problem. I can't load the Flash file on my work computer, but I can from my home computer. But then, at
least one person posted here that they CAN load the animation. Strange.
My first step will be to find out what version of Flash I have on this work PC. Unfortunatly, since I am at work there's nothing I can do to
actually FIX anything until this evening.

Not sure if this helps, but...
I'm at home, behind a hardware firewall (DSL modem/router), and a software firewall (ZoneAlarm), and the Flash animations load and play fine for
me.
Hmm, I just tried it in IE and it gets stuck; loads all the HTML, the text & graphics, but just sits there with a half-full progress bar, which
doesn't budge. My regular browser is Firefox, so it could be an IE thing, perhaps the security settings?

Let me make a wild guess here and ask a couple of questions.
Everyone who can't see the page...
Could you see the intro that I posted a few weeks ago?
Do you use Internet Explorer or some other browser?
People who CAN see the new flash animation: what browser are you using?
If I can get a couple of answers before dinnertime I may be able to get this fixed relatively soon.

Damn, Wolf was answering the question even as I asked it.
My guess is that it's something in the tags that I use to embed the animation on the page. Something in those tags only works for non-IE browsers.
I'll find out what it is and fix it. But that's after-work kind of stuff.

Now this is interesting. If I enter the URL directly to the
Flash animation in IE's address bar, it loads and runs. Yep, definitely something with the surrounding HTML tags. :)

Strangely enough, the direct-URL method didn't work for me the first time, but it worked the second time. I'm guessing the first time was a local
glitch. So to everyone else, if the direct-URL doesn't work, close the window and try it again. If it still doesn't work then there must be a
separate problem somewhere.
Thanks for posting the URL, at least folks will be able to see the thing while I get this fixed.
Eventually I will disable direct-URL access to the directory where the swf files are kept. I'm kinda glad I haven't done that yet now, but that's
an excellent way to get content stolen.

Crap, missed a spot...
Something I wanted to add earlier but forgot, was that this problem isn't an issue of running Flash in IE, at least it doesn't seem to be. I tested
IE on another Flash-heavy site and it ran just fine. That's why I thought it was most likely something with the HTML tags defining the parameters of
the animation. Sorry I forgot this.

Try it again
I made some changes in the Object tag and got the page to load properly on IE here on my laptop.
Once.
Just Once.
I dunno... I'm on a very screwy connection that may be consistantly dropping out before something important happens during the load. But I did
change SOMETHING so people who couldn't load the movie before should try it again. I don't know if its fixed yet... you tell me.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, this might be a good time to suggest to everyone who hasn't already, to get Firefox. :)

Animation
Too early to comment on the plot. Looks interesting, though.
Tried to see it with internet explorer some days ago and couldn't, today tried firefox and no problem.
Now that I read the mesages here I tried internet explorer again and it worked.
No problem with the images by the way, I didn't find anything artificial this time. I could get into the tale and follow it. It is as they say about
sound track, if you noticed it too much it is because it is bad.

Sound...? There's supposed to be sound?!
Um, anyway, I tried to view the intro again from the archive page, and got a 404 error. Here's the error-generating URL I got sent to.

I think I found something cool (and useful!) by accident.
While trying to view the intro again, I took an educated guess based on the 1st chapter's URL, and came up with this one for the intro. Not only did it work, but it also
scales to fit your browser window no matter how you resize it. Any chance this could be used intentionally? Or maybe it'll only resize like this
outside of HTML tags. I dunno, Flash is not something whose inner workings I'm familiar with. So, DI, is this worth investigating so as to
preserve the higher image quality and fit inside any size browser window? Just a thought.

No problems
I use Firefox and had no problems when I viewed it yesterday.
BTW - Looks interesting DI. Enticing story, interesting characters and the art doesn't distract from the story. Any guess on how much a
subscription would cost?

I can see it now
Looks good, but if there's supposed to be sound I couldn't hear it.
Good luck on this project, but please see if you can do quarterly updates to the other stories.
As for the password, I'm not worried about it. I had tried to locate an email link for you to ask about resetting it, but didn't see one on the site
and I couldn't log in to ask. Anyway, I'll just stick with the new user name. They don't mean anything anyway.

Sorry
Sorry nate, I was trying to make an analogy.
In the same way that if you notice the sound track in a movie it is bad sound track, if you notice the quality of the pictures in this kind of
animation it is bad animation.
My meaning didn't get clear and I am sorry.
Basically what I wanted to say is what Gorgon did, the pictures don't distract from the animation.
